Reinstalling your cable modem:
Windows 2000
Ethernet Connection

If you are connecting using an Ethernet connection, you will need to install the drivers for your ethernet card.

FYI: The ethernet card is the port on the back of your computer into which plugs your ethernet cable. On the other side of the card (inside your computer) it is plugged into the MOTHERBOARD (see picture). However, your motherbaord cannot communicate with the card until the DRIVERS for the card are installed. Drivers are components that allow your computer to communicate with a piece of hardware (in this case, your ethernet card). Once the drivers are installed, your computer can communicate with the ethernet card that is - in turn - plugged into your modem, and a connection to the internet can be made.

To install the drivers, simply follow these steps.

1. Right-Click on "MY COMPUTER."

2. Left-Click on "PROPERTIES."

3. Your System Properties window should open. Click the tab that reads, "HARDWARE."

4. Click "DEVICE MANAGER." The Device Manager window should open.

5. Double-click "NETWORK ADAPTERS," and/or "OTHER DEVICES."

6. It should give you a list of your network adapters. In there should be your ethernet card (adapter).
(NOTE: Description of card will vary depending on brand. It should read something to the effect of "PCI FastEthernet Adapter", or likewise).

7. If you find the adapter and it DOES NOT have a yellow question mark (?) or exclamation point (!) next to it, then the drivers are already installed. You should be able to plug in your modem, restart, and connect to the internet. If you cannot, Click Here.

8. If you cannot find the adapter, or if the adapter DOES have a yellow question mark (?) or exclamation point (!) next to it, you will need to install the drivers.

If your ethernet card was installed by a Cablevision technician, Click Here for instructions on installing drivers.

If your ethernet card WAS NOT installed by a Cablevision technician (i.e. it is built into the computer, or came with the computer when purchased), you will need to contact either the manufacturer of your computer (Dell, Gateway, etc...) or contact a local computer repair shop for instructions. Different cards have different installation instructions and we cannot guarentee the following steps will work unless Cablevision installed the card.
